The report also says that about one in five have sought professional help, and 70% of those between 18 and 34 report anxiety about a number of things, including keeping families safe, paying bills and relationships.<\/br>\n<br>One of the more interesting findings of the report suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2019\/09\/20\/anxiety-medication-drugs-science-exercise-brain-1457006.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">college graduates are most anxious of all<\/a>. Take a look at these numbers from the American Psychological Association:<\/br>\n<br><ul>\n \t<li>Members of Generation Z (born after 1996) reported the worst mental health of any generation.<\/li>\n \t<li>91% of those questioned claimed to feel physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress.<\/li>\n \t<li>More than 60% of college students said they had experienced \u201coverwhelming\u201d anxiety during the previous year.<\/li>\n \t<li>The number of students who visit campus counseling centers increased by more than 30% between the fall of 2009 and 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nResearchers like Joseph LeDoux, author of the book <i>Anxious<\/i>, believe that most of this increased anxiety is due to social media and the internet. \u201cWe live in a particularly complex time,\u201d said LeDoux. He goes on to explain that past generations didn\u2019t have the internet, which depicts constant warnings and stresses like shootings, break-ins, break-ups and more.<\/br>\n<br>These numbers are astonishing, which leads to the question, <i>what exactly happens in our brain when we experience anxiety?<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2019\/09\/20\/anxiety-medication-drugs-science-exercise-brain-1457006.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"><i>Newsweek<\/i><\/a> states that while parts of the brain like the amygdala or the BNST \u201cprime our bodies to react defensively by activating hormonal cascades and defensive behaviors, our minds \u2014 the higher-level processing areas of the brain \u2014 give meaning to what we are experiencing.\u201d<\/br> <br>In a nutshell, anything that we identify as \u201cfear\u201d or \u201canxiety\u201d is merely a manifestation of our consciousness.\nTreatment options vary from drugs to psychotherapeutic approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2019\/09\/20\/anxiety-medication-drugs-science-exercise-brain-1457006.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"><i>Newsweek\u2019s<\/i><\/a> report claims that many clinicians are most excited about a trend that\u2019s actually been in use for thousands of years: mindfulness.<\/br>\n<br>The article says that using techniques that help patients to focus on the present moment can serve as a tool to help them manage overwhelming fears about the future.<\/br>\n<br>By simply taking a walk, turning off the TV, talking to someone or even feeling the sun on your face, being mindful of relaxation will do wonders for anxiety.
