In fact, according to a survey by the American Council on Education, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/news\/2021\/01\/colleges-and-universities-need-campuswide-culture-change-to-better-support-students-well-being-and-address-mental-health-problems\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">top two issues facing university and college presidents<\/a> were the mental health of students and the mental health of faculty and staff.<\/p><p>Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/survey\/student-affairs-leaders-mental-health-race-relations-free-speech-and-more\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">94% of student affairs professionals<\/a> believed that mental health was the most important issue on campus, and student well-being was a close second. Mental health visits have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acenet.edu\/Research-Insights\/Pages\/Senior-Leaders\/College-and-University-Presidents-Respond-to-COVID-19-2021-Spring-Term.aspx\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">increased by 76% in public universities and 81% in private, non-profit universities<\/a>, which indicates a clear need for mental health resources at higher education institutions.<\/p><p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/survey\/college-presidents-fear-financial-and-human-toll-coronavirus-their-campuses\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">survey<\/a> of 172 college and university presidents conducted by Inside Higher Ed, student mental health topped the list of short-term concerns for 92% of respondents. In stark contrast, only 18% of presidents said they had implemented additional physical or mental health resources, and only 44% indicated plans for added resources in the future.<\/p><p>In light of how COVID-19 is impacting higher education, now is the time to move forward and make sure students have the resources they need to thrive. Higher education leaders have the responsibility to make sure that their institution offers mental health services that meet students where they are. As students learn how to get acclimated back on campus, it is crucial for them to feel supported and have access to the care they need.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-impact-of-mental-health-in-college-students\"><\/span>The impact of mental health in college students<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Student mental health is one of the most important issues that should be addressed by institutions of higher education. At the beginning of the pandemic when lockdowns were enforced, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2021\/depression-anxiety-loneliness-are-peaking-in-college-students\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">college students reported feeling depressed, anxious, stressed, and unmotivated<\/a>.<\/p><p>The ongoing mental health crisis is likely to cause student retention and engagement to decline at colleges and universities. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/healthymindsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/HMS-Fall-2020-National-Data-Report.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Healthy Minds survey<\/a>, students struggling with mental health are twice as likely to drop out. Schools have to show a true <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/7-steps-to-creating-a-caring-campus-culture\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">culture of care<\/a>. Jan Hall, TimelyCare executive director of mental health, suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diverseeducation.com\/institutions\/community-colleges\/article\/15108822\/as-pandemic-lifts-student-mental-health-needs-shift\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">creating strategies tailored to student populations<\/a> who have been most affected.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e09646 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0e09646\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Students of color<\/span><\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7dc6e15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7dc6e15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Students of color are the most disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Black and Asian American students also experienced trauma due to racial tensions rising during the pandemic. Although students of color have faced significant challenges this past year, they\u2019re least likely to seek or have access to mental health care. For Latinx students, only \u2153 seek mental health care, which is higher than the 25% of Black students, and 22% of Asian students that seek care.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a568a46 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a568a46\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">LGBTQIA+ students<\/span><\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d35e72a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d35e72a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Compared to cisgender students, LGBTQ+ students have higher rates of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and depression. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2021\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">national survey<\/a> conducted by The Trevor Project, 70% of LGBTQ+ youth stated their mental health was poor during COVID-19. Nearly half of LGBTQ+ students wanted to seek counseling from a mental health professional but didn\u2019t receive it. They were also <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/lgbtq-students-mental-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">impacted by food, housing, and basic needs insecurity<\/a> at a higher rate than other populations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c731b16 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c731b16\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">First and second-year students<\/span><\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-368800b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"368800b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some students attending 4-year universities have only experienced college virtually. This could potentially make the adjustment to a campus environment more difficult. In fact,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestcolleges.com\/research\/college-mental-health-impacts-from-covid-19\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"> 6 in 10 students<\/a> said COVID-19 lowered their ability to participate in class and meet new people.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cea0573 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cea0573\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Community college students<\/span><\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2dcf2a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2dcf2a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Undergraduate enrollment at community colleges is at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nscresearchcenter.org\/stay-informed\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">lowest rates ever<\/a>. Community colleges with a significant population of low-income, Black and Latino students have been the most affected by this. Due to job losses during the pandemic, thousands of community college students were forced to drop out or delay their education.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8059f7b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8059f7b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h6><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Male students<\/span><\/h6>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e88e2cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e88e2cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Unfortunately, the prevalence of stigma surrounding men seeking help stems from not wanting to appear weak or vulnerable. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the suicide rate among young men was <a href=\"https:\/\/collegepulse.com\/blog\/the-risks-to-young-mens-mental-health-during-the-pandemic\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">nearly four times higher than young women<\/a>. One in five men also reported not having a single person to talk to when struggling with mental health issues.<\/p><p>Student mental health is an issue that should continue to be addressed by higher education leaders both during and after the pandemic is under control. Schools must provide all students with accessible mental health services. Despite this, college counseling centers only serve <a href=\"https:\/\/nam.edu\/a-comprehensive-approach-to-mental-health-promotion-and-suicide-prevention-for-colleges-and-universities-insights-from-the-jed-campus-program\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">12 percent of the student population<\/a> on average and are struggling to meet rising demand. With an increased rate of students struggling and in need of mental health support, it\u2019s crucial that colleges and universities are prepared with a plan.<\/p><p>The JED Foundation (JED) is a non-profit that works with higher education leaders to support individual schools\u2019 mental health strategies. JED\u2019s comprehensive model addresses four major areas as a <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/post-pandemic-campus-life-student-mental-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">public health approach<\/a>:<\/p><ul><li>Promoting resilience and protective factors (promoting life skills and social connectedness)<\/li><li>Encouraging early intervention practices (identifying at-risk students and supporting help-seeking behavior)<\/li><li>Ensuring access to clinical services, including mental health support, substance use services, and crisis management procedures<\/li><li>Implementing environmental safety and means restriction (restricting access to potentially lethal means domain)<\/li><\/ul><p>There must be a campus-wide commitment to proactively address student mental health and wellness. An investment into mental health is also an investment in student success, learning, and development.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-can-colleges-and-universities-support-student-mental-health\"><\/span>How can colleges and universities support student mental health?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Student success and retention can\u2019t be obtained without a systematic and accessible approach to mental health and well-being. So how can institutions of higher education develop strategies to help empower college and university students?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1613f4c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1613f4c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-implement-student-voices-into-planning-and-strategizing\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">1.
