However, the global challenges that unfolded are a sobering reality. The stock market destroyed retirement investments for many. In a timeframe of just three weeks, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/economy\/articles\/2020-04-09\/more-than-16-million-americans-filed-for-unemployment-the-past-three-weeks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">16.7 million<\/a> people in the U.S. applied for unemployment. The <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">case count and death toll<\/a> from COVID-19 continues to grow each day, and racial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/07\/03\/us\/george-floyd-protests-crowd-size.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">protests<\/a> have reignited discussions about systemic racism, inequality and police reform. On top of all that, long-term issues such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/global-issues\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">food insecurity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/10\/earth-global-warming-nasa-natural-disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">global warming<\/a> continue to dominate headlines. This year\u2019s influx of crises have also taken a significant toll on higher ed and students.<\/p><p>As these issues in the U.S. and around the world disrupt our day-to-day, there is a tremendous impact on mental health, particularly that of college students. Many students had to scramble home or find housing after sudden campus closings due to the pandemic. This required students to adapt quickly to distance learning technologies and environments. The resulting loneliness and isolation from social distancing are significant risk factors for the mental health challenges of students.<\/p><p>If there was ever a time to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhanational.org\/whats-your-plan-college-mental-health-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">mental health plan<\/a>, it\u2019s now. To help you do that, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middlebury.edu\/office\/center-health-wellness\/health-wellness-education\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Middlebury College\u2019s<\/a> self-care planning and self-assessment tools and consider these tips:<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"structure-your-day\"><\/span>Structure your day.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Your daily schedule is likely much different than it used to be. Identify your preferred way of scheduling days \u2014 highly structured, flexibly structured or unstructured. Recreate that the best you can in your current environment.<\/p><ul><li>Keep your schedule consistent when it comes to class, meals and sleep schedule. Use familiar apps and programs for keeping a consistent schedule and sending you reminders.<\/li><li>Re-evaluate expectations and focus on what you can realistically accomplish each day.<\/li><li>Create specific spaces for work and rest to help you shift mind states. For example, if the only place for your school work is in bed, rearrange your pillows differently from your sleep set-up. If you live with others, set ground rules and discuss how to share space during periods of self-isolation or quarantine.<\/li><li>Stay active and exercise. Explore virtual workouts\u2014many do not require equipment.<\/li><li>Make time to do things that lighten your mood: take breaks, read, watch movies, make music, dance, play games, and revisit past hobbies or start a new one.<\/li><\/ul><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"connect-with-others\"><\/span>Connect with others.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Self-isolation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-what-does-social-distancing-mean\/607927\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">social distancing<\/a> can create feelings of boredom, frustration and loneliness. Maintain a sense of belonging by engaging with others.<\/p><ul><li>Schedule time to communicate with friends, classmates, coworkers, as well as biological and chosen family. Video chatting, telephone calls, texting and emailing are ways to stay connected with others without in-person contact.<\/li><li>Connect with family members at your comfort level. You may be placed in situations where you need to interact with people that you don\u2019t have a good relationship. Maintain physical and emotional proximity at the level that is right for you.<\/li><li>Advocate for your needs and support the needs of more vulnerable community members.<\/li><li>If it\u2019s part of your identity, engage in religious or spiritual activities, as many of these activities are moving into virtual spaces.<\/li><li>Revisit a hobby, interest, or a new creative endeavor. Share this with your support network. It\u2019s important to allow space for creativity, and it\u2019s okay to find peace and happiness during difficult times.<\/li><\/ul><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"set-boundaries-for-media-consumption\"><\/span>Set boundaries for media consumption.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Information about our world is rapidly changing, and news outlets provide constant coverage. Consider what level of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studenthealth.cuimc.columbia.edu\/resources-and-support\/covid-19-resources\/coping-during-pandemic#faq-Tips-for-Setting-Boundaries-for-Media-Consumption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">media consumption<\/a> is right for you. Aim to be informed and updated, rather than overwhelmed.<\/p><ul><li>Obtain information from credible media outlets, public health websites (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-nCoV\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">CDC<\/a>) and local public health authorities.<\/li><li>Maintain distance from sensational media coverage that may be exaggerated or not grounded in scientific evidence. Be aware of scams related to <a href=\"https:\/\/us-cert.cisa.gov\/ncas\/current-activity\/2020\/03\/06\/defending-against-covid-19-cyber-scams\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/li><li>Consider setting limits on the number of minutes or hours per day that you spend obtaining news updates on your phone. Are you feeling disappointed, bored, excited? You can help soothe difficult feelings by meditating, journaling, shifting environments or doing something different until the feeling passes (e.g. cook or take a warm shower for 15 minutes).<\/li><li>Identify negative thinking patterns. Are you assuming the worst, predicting a negative outcome, or defining things in black and white terms? Take some time to <a href=\"https:\/\/arfamiliesfirst.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Cognitive-Distortions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">challenge defeating statements<\/a>.<\/li><li>Stigma and rejection may be experienced by healthcare workers, people in affected communities and those with other illnesses. Separate out institutional, cultural and personal aspects of the problem. This can help you see the total picture and separate systemic issues from ones that you can control.<\/li><li>If you use alcohol, cannabis or other substances, utilize <a href=\"https:\/\/americanaddictioncenters.org\/harm-reduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">harm reduction techniques<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"make-a-plan\"><\/span>Make a plan.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>It\u2019s normal to experience concern about contracting disease during a pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studenthealth.cuimc.columbia.edu\/resources-and-support\/covid-19-resources\/coping-during-pandemic#faq-Tips-for-Making-Plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Develop plans<\/a> that balance out your needs with the needs of others.<\/p><ul><li>Know the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">symptoms of COVID-19<\/a>.<\/li><li>Update emergency contacts and keep helpful phone numbers in an accessible place.<\/li><li>Make a simplified contingency plan if you become ill. Who can help you with daily activities like shopping and errands? How will you notify professors?<\/li><li>Think through how you can support someone you know who becomes seriously ill or who experiences a loss during this time.<\/li><\/ul><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"utilize-mental-health-resources\"><\/span>Utilize mental health resources.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>What mental health resources are available to you? Start by checking your school\u2019s website for available mental health resources. Many schools offer counseling services that are in-person or virtual, like telehealth. Organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.activeminds.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Active Minds<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jedfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">The Jed Foundation (JED)<\/a> feature online resources that can help.<\/p><p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/college-students-stress-statistics\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">study of college students by TimelyCare<\/a>, 75% of students said they\u2019re open to utilizing telehealth to receive mental health care.
