However, they also face unprecedented mental health challenges.<\/p><p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highereddive.com\/news\/half-of-college-students-say-their-mental-health-is-fair-to-terrible-s\/758571\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2024 Steve Fund\/Harris Poll<\/a> survey found that 51% of college students rate their mental health as fair, poor, or terrible, while 40% report being very or extremely stressed about maintaining it. These numbers highlight why student well-being must be seen as mission-critical for engagement and retention. And how can higher education leaders help them succeed?<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-makes-gen-z-different-than-other-generations\"><\/span>What makes Gen Z different than other generations?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Gen Z isn\u2019t just a younger version of Millennials. They are distinct in ways that matter deeply in relation to higher education and mental health support.<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Digital Natives: <\/strong>Nearly every Gen Z student owns a smartphone. Among U.S. adults aged 18\u201329, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/fact-sheet\/mobile\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">98% have one<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2024\/01\/31\/americans-use-of-mobile-technology-and-home-broadband\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">62% say they\u2019re online almost constantly<\/a>. Digital tools shape how Gen Z learns, communicates, and experiences stress.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Most Educated Generation:<\/strong> Gen Z has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2018\/11\/15\/early-benchmarks-show-post-millennials-on-track-to-be-most-diverse-best-educated-generation-yet\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">higher high school completion and college enrollment<\/a> than previous generations. Yet they expect tangible returns, with 57% saying their <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/657686\/college-prices-seen-unfair-worth-investment.aspx\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">college investment should pay off within five years<\/a>.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Most Diverse Generation:<\/strong> Gen Z is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2018\/11\/15\/early-benchmarks-show-post-millennials-on-track-to-be-most-diverse-best-educated-generation-yet\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">most racially and ethnically diverse generation<\/a>. About half of all <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/digest\/d24\/tables\/dt24_306.30.asp\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">undergraduates are students of color<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/NCHA-IIIb_FALL_2023_REFERENCE_GROUP_DATA_REPORT.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">One in four identify as LGBQ+<\/a>, and roughly 5% identify as transgender, nonbinary, or another gender minority.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Mental Health is Normalized:<\/strong> Use of counseling and therapy is now common. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/healthymindsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2024-2025_HMS-National-Data-Report_Student.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">one-third of students received mental health care in the past year<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/new-class-new-conversations-what-incoming-freshmen-want-colleges-to-know\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">65% accessed support before college<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/nabhs.org\/generation-z-and-prevalence-of-mental-health-issues\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">pandemic amplified existing challenges for Gen Z college students<\/a>. Lockdowns fueled social isolation, information overload, and digital fatigue. Beyond the pandemic, research highlights a variety of unique pressures that have created an ongoing strain on mental health:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Ongoing Crises and Societal Stressors:<\/strong> Current events have a profound impact on students. In 2024, 18\u201334-year-olds were the most likely to say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/reports\/stress-in-america\/2024\/2024-stress-in-america-full-report.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">mass shootings are a significant source of stress<\/a> (68%), and issues like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196%2824%2900229-8\/fulltext\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">climate change have been found to be a widespread cause of distress<\/a> for youth in the U.S.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Financial Pressures:<\/strong> The stress of finances is an unfortunate reality for the majority of students. Nearly 80% of <a href=\"https:\/\/healthymindsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2024-2025_HMS-National-Data-Report_Student.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">students say their finances are stressful<\/a>. One in three who considered stopping out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luminafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/State-of-Higher-Education-2024.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">cited cost as a reason<\/a>. Basic needs insecurity, including food and housing, <a href=\"https:\/\/hope.temple.edu\/research\/hope-center-basic-needs-survey\/2023-2024-student-basic-needs-survey-report\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">affects 59% of students<\/a>.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Uncertainty About the Future:<\/strong> While many <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/new-class-new-conversations-what-incoming-freshmen-want-colleges-to-know\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">students come to college feeling optimistic<\/a>, almost <a href=\"https:\/\/static.waltonfamilyfoundation.org\/fe\/e2\/9d8ec48b431eb21c0bd553d53958\/walton-family-foundation-gallup-2025-year-3-gen-z-annual-report-081925.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">half report feeling unprepared<\/a> for life after college.\u00a0<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Lack of Belonging:<\/strong> For many Gen Z students, the most significant challenge of college is finding a sense of community. Around <a href=\"https:\/\/healthymindsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2024-2025_HMS-National-Data-Report_Student.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">two-thirds of students feel lonely<\/a> at least some of the time, and one in four often feel isolated. According to a study by Active Minds and TimelyCare, students who feel lonely are over <a href=\"https:\/\/activeminds.org\/press-release\/new-data-emphasizes-the-correlation-between-loneliness-and-student-mental-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">four times more likely to experience severe psychological distress<\/a>.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Academic Pressure:<\/strong> Stress also shows up in the classroom for Gen Z.\u00a0 Two in five undergrads say their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/student-success\/health-wellness\/2024\/08\/19\/experts-weigh-college-student-mental-health-crisis\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">mental health significantly affects their academic performance<\/a>.
