Given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2021\/07\/impact-anti-asian-racism\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">surge in hate incidents<\/a> directed toward the AAPI community in the past year, higher education leaders can also offer help and inspire hope by supporting the mental health and well-being of AAPI college students.<\/p><p>Since the year 2000, AAPI college student <a href=\"https:\/\/pnpi.org\/asian-americans-and-pacific-islanders\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">enrollment increased 36%.<\/a> Today, Asian American students and Pacific Islander students comprise nearly 20% of college students at four-year institutions and 14% of students at two-year institutions. While the AAPI population continues to grow on college campuses across America, research shows that they have the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/report\/2019-nsduh-detailed-tables\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">lowest help-seeking rate<\/a> of any ethnicity, with only two out of 10 with mental illness receiving treatment.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"why-dont-most-aapis-seek-help-for-mental-illness\"><\/span>Why don\u2019t most AAPIs seek help for mental illness?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culturally specific attitudes among\u00a0AAPIs\u00a0that stigmatize help-seeking include:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c831a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c831a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1-language-barriers\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">1. Language barriers<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17284db elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"17284db\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Over <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2012\/acs\/acsbr11-06.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">13 million<\/a> U.S. residents were born in Asia, representing over 30% of the total foreign-born population in the nation. The disparity between the high need and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pi\/oema\/resources\/ethnicity-health\/asian-american\/psychological-treatment\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">poor availability<\/a> of linguistically and culturally appropriate mental health service providers is a significant gap in accessing treatment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74989cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74989cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2-stigma\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">2. Stigma\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aae1a03 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aae1a03\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Mental illness has often been considered a weakness or a sign of poor parenting \u2014 a source of shame to the individual and to the household. The desire to protect the family\u2019s reputation often discourages help-seeking until there is a crisis. According to a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA) survey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Your-Journey\/Identity-and-Cultural-Dimensions\/Asian-American-and-Pacific-Islander#:~:text=Barriers%20to%20Mental%20Health%20Care,health%20care%20and%20quality%20treatment\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">AAPIs resist getting mental health treatment<\/a> because they don\u2019t want others to find out, confidentiality concerns, and fear of peers\u2019 negative opinions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dc15e3a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dc15e3a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3-model-minority-myth\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">3. Model minority myth<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-678b232 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"678b232\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Asian American communities are burdened with the \u201cmodel minority\u201d stereotype &#8212; a prevalent and misleading assumption that depicts AAPIs as uniformly well-adjusted, attaining more socioeconomic success than other minority groups through strong work ethic, conforming to social norms, and excelling academically \u2014 particularly in math. The AAPI community, however, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK44245\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">highly diverse<\/a> across subgroups in rates of socioeconomic, physical health, and mental health challenges. The social and familial pressure created by this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2019\/12\/countering-stereotypes\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">stereotype<\/a> prevents community members from seeking mental health resources<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e0ee74 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0e0ee74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-immigration-status\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">4. Immigration status<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4dedad0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4dedad0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSome AAPI immigrants may not seek necessary mental health care due to fears of jeopardizing their immigration status. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-10cf90e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"10cf90e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-insurance-coverage\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">5. Insurance coverage<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f329a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9f329a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Concerns over the high cost of mental health care also led to lower rates of help-seeking. Some groups within the AAPI community face disparities in coverage \u2014 Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) populations have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/racial-equity-and-health-policy\/issue-brief\/changes-in-health-coverage-by-race-and-ethnicity-since-the-aca-2010-2018\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">9.3% uninsured rate<\/a> compared to 6.8% for Asian American communities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c017a79 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c017a79\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6-religion\"><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">6. Religion\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-087e2dd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"087e2dd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Spirituality and faith have an influence on mental health, especially for the AAPI community in which <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.americanprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/AAPI-Demographics.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">religious diversity<\/a> is a distinguishing characteristic. Faith communities often offer a built-in social support system. However, religious communities may also perpetuate stigma around mental illness that can delay treatment in some instances.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3cea75b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"3cea75b\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c2b7bd6 ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"c2b7bd6\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2b284b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a2b284b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The cumulative effect of these issues is that Asian Americans are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pi\/oema\/resources\/ethnicity-health\/asian-american\/article-mental-health\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">three times less likely<\/a> than White people to seek mental health services. For higher education, it\u2019s critical that communication and engagement with AAPI students is made to help break through these barriers to health and well-being.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-is-covid-19-affecting-aapi-students\"><\/span>How is COVID-19 affecting AAPI Students?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>News and reports from social media have documented widespread instances of anti-Asian racism and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/xenophobia-fear-of-strangers-2671881\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">xenophobia<\/a> worldwide stemming from the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic being pinpointed to Wuhan, China. In the U.S., the <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/fbi-warns-potential-surge-hate-crimes-asian-americans\/story?id=69831920\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">FBI warned<\/a> of a surge in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans, and the U.S. Department of Justice with the U.S. Department of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ocr\/docs\/ocr-factsheet-aapi-202105.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">published guidance<\/a> for confronting the rising COVID-19-related anti-Asian violence in schools.<\/p><p>Sadly, blaming a particular ethnic group during an infectious disease outbreak is common. During the 1853 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/codeswitch\/2018\/10\/31\/415535913\/how-yellow-fever-turned-new-orleans-into-the-city-of-the-dead\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">yellow fever epidemic<\/a> in the U.S., European immigrants were the targets of stigmatization. During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2020\/02\/04\/2003-sars-outbreak-fueled-anti-asian-racism-this-pandemic-doesnt-have\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">SARS outbreak<\/a> that originated in China, East Asians were the target of hate incidents. And Africans were targeted when <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3544130\/ebola-panic-xenophobia\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Ebola<\/a> emerged in 2014. For this reason, the World Health Organization (WHO) opted against denoting a geographic location when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/transcripts\/who-audio-emergencies-coronavirus-full-press-conference-11feb2020-final.pdf?sfvrsn=e2019136_2\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">officially naming<\/a> the coronavirus.
