class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2020\/10\/uninsured-rates-highest-for-young-adults-aged-19-to-34.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/a> reports that adults ages 19-34 had the highest uninsured rates of any group in the U.S. And even if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/09\/03\/four-ways-for-college-students-to-manage-their-health-care-costs.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">students are insured<\/a>, they\u2019re likely to be on their parent\u2019s plan, which may not cover out-of-state or out-of-network providers. Expanding college students\u2019 access to care is important. But the seamless integration of care into the lives of students is equally (if not more) important.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12171751\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">Health care access<\/a> is defined as being able to get the health care coverage one needs when it is needed, and at an affordable cost. Unfortunately, a<a href=\"https:\/\/repository.law.umich.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1231&amp;context=mjlr\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"> study on student access to health care<\/a> confirms that college-aged young adults are overrepresented in the uninsured population, with one disproportionately affected population being traditionally underserved minority students. Students with private health insurance coverage are often functionally uninsured, having difficulty paying for healthcare. This forces uninsured and functionally uninsured students to rely on school-sponsored health insurance plans for access to care. The study notes that these plans often have uneven coverage, limited benefits, exclusions and high co-pays and deductibles, and provide little health care security for students.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-happens-when-there-are-barriers-to-care\"><\/span>What happens when there are barriers to care?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>College is stressful for students. In fact, nearly all college students complain about <a href=\"https:\/\/collegenews.org\/student-suicide-rates-remain-worrying-amid-pandemic\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">significant stress<\/a>. It\u2019s normal for students to feel worried, anxious, restless, or sad from time to time. <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/most-common-health-concerns-and-behaviors-affecting-college-students\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">Common health challenges for students<\/a> also include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Additionally, psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia often emerge when people are in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/schizophrenia\/schizophrenia-onset-symptoms\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">late teens to early thirties<\/a>. If these feelings or mental health symptoms persist, they can interfere with daily living and academic performance. Without treatment, college students are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4527955\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">more likely to drop out, abuse substances, and commit suicide.<\/a><\/p><p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ccmh.psu.edu\/assets\/docs\/2021-CCMH-Annual-Report.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">2021 Center for Collegiate Mental Health Annual Report<\/a>, college students are increasingly experiencing and reporting mental health issues. Findings suggest that some students may be at a higher risk for mental health challenges, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/student-mental-health-resources\/_files\/pdf\/Webinar%20QA.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">undocumented students<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.va.gov\/currents\/1017-Veterans-face-challenges-in-higher-education.cfm\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">veteran students<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/Find-Support\/LGBTQ\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">LGBTQ students<\/a>. Students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/41138256_Social_Support_and_Mental_Health_Among_College_Students\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">low socioeconomic backgrounds and have low social support<\/a> are also at a higher risk, especially considering the increasing cost of attendance and related food insecurity issues.<\/p><p>Simply put, students need easily accessible care to stay healthy, engaged, and on the graduation path. Research confirms that<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25009923\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"> having health insurance<\/a> is associated with:<\/p><ul><li>Better health<\/li><li>Lower health care costs<\/li><li>Less debt<\/li><\/ul><p>In contrast,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2775760\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"> not having health insurance<\/a> is associated with:<\/p><ul><li>Higher rates of preventable deaths and illnesses<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2012\/jun\/young-uninsured-and-debt-why-young-adults-lack-health-insurance\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">More difficulty<\/a> paying medical bills and higher debt<\/li><li>The use of less effective and more expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/277908745_The_impact_of_insurance_coverage_on_consumer_utilization_of_health_services_An_exploratory_study\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">medical care<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>A report by<a href=\"https:\/\/sph.cuny.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Report_04_Health-Care-Access_Final.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"> Healthy CUNY and CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy<\/a> found that those students who have access to their parent&#8217;s health insurance are more likely to enroll in college than those whose parents lack coverage. Young people who have access to health insurance via a parent are 5% to 22% more likely to enroll as full-time students than individuals without parental health insurance.<\/p><p>The CUNY report asserts this:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cSeveral plausible pathways may link having health insurance with outcomes that influence academic success in college students including better use of preventive services, thus avoiding more serious illnesses and absences or leaves; earlier intervention for depression, an important cause of academic problems; fewer unintended pregnancies as a result of better access to contraceptive care; better management of chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma; and lower medical debts that could interfere with tuition payments. To our knowledge, empirical studies have not yet tested these hypotheses.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p>In the Healthy CUNY survey, 13.5% of CUNY undergraduates &#8212; over 33,000 students &#8212; reported that some health problem had interfered with their school work. Overall, 13.2% of CUNY students reported they had been diagnosed with a chronic condition in the last five years, with asthma, diabetes, and hypertension the most commonly reported illnesses. Students with one or more chronic conditions were more likely to have a grade point average of less than 2.5, to have failed out of a degree program, and\/or to have taken a leave of absence from school.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"has_ae_slider elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e28fc21 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default ae-bg-gallery-type-default\" data-id=\"e28fc21\"
