href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/press-release\/telehealth-accounted-for-8-of-outpatient-visits-more-than-a-year-into-covid-19-pandemic-suggesting-a-more-permanent-shift-in-how-patients-receive-care\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">fewer than 1%<\/a> of outpatient visits prior to the pandemic. But between March and August of 2020, that percentage jumped up to 13%. While overall telehealth usage for outpatient visits leveled out to 8%, the demand for virtual mental health care remains high, with one report finding that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercehealthcare.com\/tech\/demand-for-virtual-mental-health-soaring-here-are-notable-trends-who-using-it-and-why\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">62% of consumers<\/a> prefer a virtual visit for their regular mental health visits. The report stated that consumers said they would prefer a virtual visit even after it is deemed safe to be in person. However, as people return to regular in-person medical and mental health care, <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.zoom.us\/docs\/en-us\/future-of-video-conferencing.html?_ga=2.47168295.1678110071.1643654065-30563482.1639505332\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">6 out of 10 people who used virtual care<\/a> say they would prefer both digital and in-person access to health services in the future. Clearly, there\u2019s a demand for a hybrid model of care. But what does that mean for higher education?<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-rise-of-telehealth-in-education\"><\/span>The rise of telehealth in education<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>Campus closures and social distancing to reduce the spread of COVID-19 compelled many colleges and universities to deliver more care services remotely. The federal government supported the move during this period by <a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/blog\/state-licensure-considerations-for-the-adoption-of-telehealth-services-in-higher-education-during-covid-19\/?highlight=state%20lines\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">removing regulatory barriers<\/a> and payment policies. For example, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/ocr-will-ease-restrictions-telehealth-tech-during-covid-19\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">said<\/a> it \u201cwill not impose penalties for non-compliance with the regulatory requirements under the HIPAA Rules against covered healthcare providers in connection with the good faith provision of telehealth during the COVID-19 nationwide public health emergency.\u201d<\/p><p>The urgent need to support students coupled with relaxed policies and penalties made online platforms for medical and mental health services an effective solution for expanding healthcare\u2014and rightly so. PubMed studies show that virtual health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7201188\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">effectively treats depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6877279\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29652630\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">sleep<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6614998\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">stress<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3173258\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">alcohol use disorders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27046668\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">PTSD<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5403617\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\">eating disorders<\/a> in college and university students.<\/p><p>Colleges and universities added online services for student mental health and well-being using various platforms, including phone apps, video visits, online modules, webinars, and text messaging. Adding virtual services became a big part of helping higher education leaders deliver the care needed by college students during a global pandemic. And, it showed that virtual healthcare could play a prominent role in serving students in the future.<\/p><h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-is-a-hybrid-model-of-care\"><\/span>What is a hybrid model of care?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4><p>A hybrid model of care brings together the best of telehealth and in-person treatment. It uses technology for video conferencing, patient monitoring, appointment scheduling, and follow-up. In the hybrid model of care, the barriers between in-person and virtual care disappear and telehealth is infused throughout the system, creating seamless care pathways and patient experiences. And contrary to one myth about virtual care, it does not mean replacing on-campus clinicians and staff.
