&#8211; Belonging, not burnout, is top of mind for the Class of 2029, but concerns about finances, politics and digital overload aren&#8217;t far behind.<\/p><p>For the first time, TimelyCare, higher education\u2019s most trusted virtual health and well-being provider, asked incoming students \u2013 before their first class, before their first roommate, before their first late-night study session \u2013 to share what they\u2019re carrying as they prepare to embark on their next chapter.<\/p><p>The nationwide survey of more than 1,100 incoming first-time college and university students revealed a class anticipating newfound independence, actively seeking connection and chasing personal growth. At the same time, they\u2019re arriving on campus digitally drained and deeply anxious about finances, academics and the political climate.<\/p><h4>Balancing Promise with Pressure<\/h4><p>For many incoming students, the fall semester represents a fresh start: a chance to make new friends, build community and pursue their academic goals.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Nearly two-thirds (64%)<\/strong> are <strong>\u201cthrilled,\u201d \u201coptimistic,\u201d and \u201ccautiously excited\u201d<\/strong> about starting a new chapter in college.<\/li><li>Before even setting foot onto campus, <strong>7 in 10 students are confident<\/strong> in their ability to<strong> make new friends.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>What co-exists alongside their sense of optimism is the reality of growing pressures.<\/p><ul><li>Nearly 9 in 10 (87%) new students plan to work at least part-time while enrolled, with 14% expecting to take on full-time jobs.<\/li><li><strong>External stressors<\/strong> are also weighing heavily: <strong>61% say they\u2019re concerned<\/strong> about the current <strong>political climate<\/strong>, and<strong> 58% are concerned<\/strong> about the current <strong>social climate.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>More than half (55%)<\/strong> of new students are worried about keeping up with <strong>academic demands.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>\u201cToday\u2019s students are juggling far more than academics,\u201d said Dr. Nicole Trevino, Vice President for Student Success at TimelyCare. \u201cThey\u2019re balancing jobs and family obligations, managing emotional health, and staying tuned in to cultural and political tensions, all while trying to succeed in school. To meet them where they are, we must rethink traditional models of support.\u201d<\/p><h4>Emotional Readiness Is the New Academic Readiness<\/h4><p>Today\u2019s students aren\u2019t waiting until a crisis to think about mental health; they\u2019re arriving already aware of its role in their success. This year\u2019s incoming class is emotionally attuned and proactive about their well-being:<\/p><ul><li><strong>65% have received therapy<\/strong> before starting college (<a href=\"https:\/\/timelycare.com\/nearly-60-of-college-students-accessed-mental-health-care-in-grades-k-12-timelycare-survey-finds\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_self\">up from 58% in 2023<\/a>).<\/li><li><strong>83% are planning or open to using campus mental health services.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>68% say they would talk to someone if they were feeling down.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>This generation is rewriting the narrative. They are normalizing help-seeking, not hiding it, and expecting institutions to meet them with care that is visible, accessible, and stigma-free.<\/p><h4>Connection Is Everything, But Harder Than It Looks<\/h4><p>One of the most pressing themes in the emotional journey is the desire to belong. While many students are excited to meet new people, the data reveals a quieter challenge:<\/p><ul><li><strong>57% report feeling lonely<\/strong> at least occasionally in the past week<\/li><li><strong>30% are worried about their ability to make friends.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Students may not be prepared for the loneliness that can develop over time or have the interpersonal skills to build meaningful relationships. According to a survey by<a href=\"https:\/\/activeminds.org\/resource\/loneliness-resilience-and-mental-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"> TimelyCare and Active Minds<\/a> from February 2024, <strong>nearly two-thirds (65%)<\/strong> of currently enrolled college students reported experiencing frequent loneliness.<\/p><p>\u201cStudents crave meaningful connection,\u201d said Dr. Bob Booth, Chief Medical Officer at TimelyCare. \u201cBut without guidance, loneliness and low social confidence can quietly erode their well-being. That\u2019s why campus programs that support belonging from day one aren\u2019t just helpful, they\u2019re essential.\u201d<\/p><h4>AI-Empowered, Digitally Exhausted<\/h4><p>Incoming students are feeling more AI-fluent from day one, and many are embracing it.<\/p><ul><li><strong>63%<\/strong> feel at least somewhat or very <strong>confident in using AI tools<\/strong>, like ChatGPT, responsibly.<\/li><li><strong>45%<\/strong> say they <strong>use AI to enhance their learning<\/strong>, not as a shortcut.<\/li><\/ul><p>But behind the confidence is a deeper strain.<\/p><ul><li><strong>72%<\/strong> of students say they often or occasionally<strong> feel overwhelmed by being constantly connected via text, social media, etc.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Nearly half (49%)<\/strong> have <strong>mixed feelings about technology<\/strong> and how it affects their connection with others.<\/li><\/ul><p>The result is a paradox: a digitally native generation equipped to harness cutting-edge tools, yet craving more meaningful, less mediated forms of connection.<\/p><h4>Redefining \u201cCollege-Ready\u201d<\/h4><p>College, for this incoming class of students, isn\u2019t just about classes. It\u2019s about growing into the people they want to become, as one student explained.<\/p><p>\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to college because it\u2019s a chance to gain more independence, meet new people from different backgrounds, and study something I\u2019m passionate about,\u201d one student shared. \u201cI\u2019m excited to experience a new environment, grow as a person, and start working toward my future goals.\u201d<\/p><p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/48907972.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/48907972\/Content\/Survey%20Results%20-%20Incoming%20Freshmen%20July%202025.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener\"> national survey<\/a> of over 1,100 incoming college students ages 18-29 was fielded in June 2025.
